Science Works!
Science Works! is an intensive, year-long professional development experience for science educators in Grades 3-6. This three -year program was designed to offer educators 120 hours of professional development. Educators attended a Year 1 program designed to engage teachers in inquiry-based instruction, life, earth, and physical science content, and effective instructional strategies through 80 hours of professional development. Year 2, offered an additional 40 hours of professional development and included a heavy emphasis on inquiry-based instruction, formative assessment, and opportunities to engage in grant writing.
Funded by a three-year Ohio Mathematics Science Partnership Grant (MSP), Science Works! is highly evaluated and well received by participants. Over the course of the program, 300 teachers, working with over 10,000 students in classrooms in Central Ohio districts participated in this initiative. Partnerships included South-Western City Schools, Columbus City Schools, Whitehall City Schools, Hamilton-Local Schools, Capital University, The Ohio State University, and the Ohio Resource Center. Science Works! was coordinated by the Teaching & Learning Collaborative.
