K-2 COUNTS! (Creating Opportunities to Understand Numbers Together with Students)
In an effort to begin to implement the Common Core Standards in Mathematics, TLC Staff worked closely with the MS2 (Maximizing Success in Mathematics & Science) initiative, a group of curriculum directors that meets monthly to address needs in science and mathematics. 120 educators from 14 districts attended a 3-day session in the summer of 2011 to begin this process. These same teachers, mathematics coaches, and administrators will continue this professional development throughout the school year, attending three additional sessions. An optional iDiscovery course is also adding to this Common Core standards iniative and deepening teacher understanding in both content and pedagogy.
K-2 COUNTS! is designed to:
· Introduce the Common Core Standards in Mathematics (CCSSM) and the Mathematic Practices.
· Develop a deeper understanding of the intent within the standards and make connections for a deeper understanding.
· Provide teachers an opportunity to plan for instruction based on the Critical Areas of Focus.
· Develop teacher content knowledge needed to teach the Common Core Standards with understanding and coherence.
· Develop effective instructional practices drawn from research based theory to build students’ mathematical proficiency
· Use learning progressions to develop a sequence of instruction across grade levels K-2
· Integrate literature as a way of building a context for the math they are learning and to enhance conceptual understanding
· Discuss and assess student learning from lessons implemented by participants In between sessions,
· Explore formative assessments, performance tasks, and writing in mathematics.
