                      Experiences

Funded by the Ohio Board of Regents Improving Teacher Quality grant, this collaborative partnership between TLC, Capital University, Whitehall City Schools, Lancaster City Schools, and Groveport Madison Local Schools engaged 50 teachers (Grades 3-6) in inquiry-based science.  Teachers met for an intensive 8-day summer institute, followed by sessions throughout the 2010-2011 school year both in-person and online for a total of 100 contact hours.

The innovative approach utilizes face-to-face sessions, an on-line collaborative portal, and interactions with researchers from the Freshwater Mussel Conservation & Research Center.  Participants developed their own research questions regarding freshwater mussels, gained valuable knowledge during field experiences, and shared their findings during a SIPHON SYMPOSIUM (Sharing Inquiry Projects and Having On-going conversatioN) in order to develop a model for effective instructional planning which will be implemented during the school year.
